Sarali Varisai are the first set of lessons in Carnatic music. These lessons are set in the ragam Mayamalavagowlai, and help in the systemic learning of the 7 swaras - Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Da & Ni, in the simplest form of 8 beat cycle, Adi Thalam. These lessons are usually practiced in 3 speeds / kalams. Lessons 1 to 8 help learn the swara positions, or swara sthanas in ascending and descending order. Lessons 9 to 13 use the swaras to create a short melody.
