The national assembly has overwhelmingly supported a bill by Mwatate lawmaker Andrew Mwadime, seeking to give MPs a choice between a contributory pension or gratuity calculated at 31% of their gross pay every five years. In the proposed pension arrangement, MPs would be deducted 12.6% of their monthly pay, and the government tops it up with a 25.4% contribution. The MPs, in the parliamentary pensions amendment bill, 2019 also want legislators who serve for only one term considered for the exit package, unlike the current situation where only lawmakers who serve for at least two terms are considered pensionable. The bill sailed through the second reading stage, and moves to the committee stage, where MPs can bring amendments.
